We recently received a PlayStation 5 shipped in from Heber, Utah that had stopped cooling properly after a DIY repair attempt went wrong.
The Problem
The customer originally opened the PS5 to address a fan-related issue, but during the process the fan connector was broken off the motherboard. With the connector no longer attached, the cooling fan couldn’t operate correctly, putting the console at risk of overheating and permanent damage.
This type of damage is common after DIY repairs, as PS5 fan connectors are small, fragile, and soldered directly to the board.
The Repair
Our technicians carefully inspected the motherboard and confirmed the connector had been torn away from its solder pads. To fix it properly, the repair required:
Rebuilding the damaged solder pads
Microsoldering the fan connector back onto the board
Securing and adhering the connector to ensure long-term stability
Testing the fan circuit to confirm proper operation
This wasn’t a simple reattachment — the board had to be restored before the connector could be safely reinstalled.
The Result
Once the repair was complete, the PS5 powered on normally and the cooling fan functioned as designed. The console was tested under load to verify stable temperatures and reliable operation.
The customer’s PS5 was fully restored and shipped back ready for gaming again.
